Moving COBOL to .NET

Micro Focus elevates COBOL to "First Class Citizen" status within the .NET Framework. Existing COBOL business logic and data access can be reused within the .NET framework opening up the capabilities of .NET to existing COBOL applications. Once under the .NET Framework, applications can be extended and new application code created that utilizes .NET classes and features.

Aims and Approach

The aim of this consulting service is to help your team to learn how to move your COBOL application into .NET, and then take advantage of the .NET Framework to extend the application.

Our consultants will work with your team to get them up to speed while they move and extend an initial subset of the application.

This consulting service is typically combined with training for the development team in the specific Micro Focus products they will utilize during and after the service engagement is complete.

Key Stages

Micro Focus consultants will work with your application development team as they:

  • Review the application and select the initial subset of the application to move to .NET
  • Install and configure the appropriate Micro Focus products
  • Move/extend initial subset of application code within .NET including as appropriate:
  • Using the Visual Studio IDE with COBOL
  • Developing new user interfaces with COBOL WinForms or WebForms
  • Making use of the .NET Framework classes
  • Changing the application data access to ADO.NET
  • Creating and consuming web services within .NET
  • Cross-language (C#, VB.NET…) debugging and testing
